Get the Look: Emma Roberts' Lace Voilette Wedding Veil

Meet the A-list wedding veil trend everyone's talking about: the mask veil - or voilette.

It hit the headlines at actor Emma Roberts' wedding, when she wore a mask-style face veil with a fine lace edge - worn down for the ceremony, then lifted back to wear like a headband once the vows were done. It's romantic, a little vintage, and instantly directional, and it's already proving popular with brides looking for something less traditional and more style-led.

What is a voilette veil?

A voilette is a short face veil, usually starting above the eyes and finishing below the eyes or to the chin or a little lower. Also known as a micro veil or mask veil, a voilette can be highly embellished or extremely simple and is usually made of tulle but can also be made of other fine fabrics like lace or netting (such as a birdcage veil).

Why it's having a moment

I've been making short veils and birdcage veils for around 15 years, and over the last few years I have led a rennaisance of the birdcage veil for modern brides planning town hall or courthouse civil ceremonies. I also decided to create some more ethereal looks using tulle, lace and fabric florals that would be suitable for bigger wedding ceremonies.

Fast forward to the 2026 New York Bridal Fashion Week runways and voilettes or micro veils were one of the hottest trends on the runway.

It was really only a matter of time before a celebrity would choose to wear this look - and Emma Roberts' look really made waves when it was featured in Vogue magazine after her wedding at the weekend.

Her veil had a similar style to my Nicole veil although mine features a more delicate French lace and a sheerer tulle that allows facial features to shine through.

The Nicole veil simply pins into position at each side of the head using the provided bobby pins or kirby grips - allowing you a lot of choice about where the veil sits on your face or head.

Whether you choose a veil like the Nicole voilette or one of my other voilette styles, a micro veil is the perfect partner to a style-led vintage or editorial bridal look.

How to style a voilette

All of my voilettes pin easily into place just above the ears, and are tailored to fit to the curve of your face and head. This means you have lots of flexibility about where you position your veil. You can watch me demonstrate pinning a voilette veil into place here.

Most voilettes are worn to cover your eyes and finish around the nose - either a little above or below the tip of the nose, depending on your own preference.

With veils measuring 6 inches deep or more you can style them sitting over the top of the head or even covering your entire face.

Some veils can be lifted back for the reception, either gathered together to look like a headband, or worn in Juliet Cap position, resting on the top or towards the back of the head.
